Instant gratification is what keeps you away from wealth.
I hope you are having a great week. As the title says, wealth moves from the impatient to the patient. Today, I'm going to break down the main reason why most people can't achieve a wealthy position in life. Unfortunately, for those who like to blame outside circumstances for their shortcomings, the reason is not your government, entrepreneurs, rich people, etc. Let's start.
We have to start by understanding that money is a ledger that allows us to track wealth and the net worth of those who trade goods and services. We use this tool to move fast and not have to carry our goods and services around. When you obtain money in exchange for your labor, it gives you the opportunity to transform the energy you generated with your goods or service into a different good or service you need. It's a very simple concept; however, as simple as it looks, not many people understand this. The instant gratification world has created a generation of people whose only objective is to accumulate money. They don't even know what they're going to use the money for, but the goal is to achieve status. They even compare themselves in net worth to people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Marcos Galperin, and many others. The big difference: these people have actually created goods or services that completely changed the world. You can understand how wrong and sad it is to measure these people by their net worth and not their achievements. Unfortunately, for the people who live in that world, there's a need to achieve status as soon as possible, and it doesn't really matter how they accomplish their goal, which is the main problem.
In 2020, YouTube got flooded with people offering magical overnight solutions to become a stock or crypto trader, an influencer making jokes and laughing at other people, and online courses that tell you to quit your job for an opportunity that never arrives. Their misery turned most of them into scammers because the money wasn't arriving soon enough. By 2022, we had no doctors, no chefs, no firefighters, no police, no artists, no truck drivers, no bakers, but thousands of Uber, DoorDash, and Instacart delivery options. People asked to be treated with decency while humiliating themselves on TikTok or OnlyFans to achieve status. Then, with the money, they went on a rampage to buy all the expensive stuff that people like Elon Musk will never buy. The result is that they run out of money very quickly, and in order to keep participating in the game, they have to continue chasing it by any means. When you choose a job or activity with the simple objective of obtaining money and achieving status, your journey becomes a rat race that will never end. Playing the lottery, going to the casino, or gambling are quick shortcuts, but for every winner, there are a thousand people who didn't make it.
Having a low time preference in your life and stopping the search for instant gratification is the key to achieving the type of generational wealth that people like Dale Carnegie, Henry Ford, and many others had.
The main reason people don't achieve this level of wealth is that they never look past the money; they never focus on what good or service is behind the transaction. Changing the world, improving someone's life, becoming a mentor, providing good customer service, or simply making someone happy are not things that stand in the way of your success. On the contrary, if you don't do them, it's the reason why you are not achieving your goals.
My favorite books to start the journey are: "Think and Grow Rich," "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," "The Bitcoin Standard," and "Lessons of History."
Having a low time preference is one of the hardest paths to take in life. It means curating your diet and regular habits because you understand that good health is good for you. It means that you get good sleep because it helps you. It means that you learn new skills because that allows you to participate in society in a productive way. It means that you educate yourself so no one can think or act on your behalf. It means that you can build for yourself – in other words, proof of work.
Those who constantly chase instant gratification are passing all their gains of their hard work to those who are willing to live a low time preference life. Protecting your wealth by not purchasing unnecessary things, depending on a credit card for luxuries, and understanding that money is simply an exchange of energy for goods and services well provided is a great start. Protecting your health so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor, protecting your family so you can share your knowledge with the next generations, and passing along what you learn is the big step. Once you cross that one, the next one is changing the world and becoming part of that "Elite" of people that will go down in history as the one who gave us tools to become the best version of ourselves. Don't hate or envy people like Walt Disney, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Dale Carnegie, Henry Ford, and many others. Have them as your mentors, and you will become the best version of yourself.
See you next week!
